“Ocean Highway” is their first album consisting of seven songs, influenced by artists like Sigur Rós as well as ambient and music for theater and movies.
Okeano are Apostolos Lagarias on piano and guitar, Christie Rok on vocals, Emi Path on drones and vocal layers and George Karanikolaou on drums.
The piano becomes the center of musical attention as it creates the core melodies and atmosphere of each song. Lagarias (a published author in Greece), also proves his writing skills by providing the songs with their dreamlike poetic lyrics. Christie Rok’s vocal performances are an equally crucial part of the album. Her experience as an actor leaves a deep mark on the way she takes words and turns them into feelings.
Emi Path’s drones and background vocals add a layer of emotion and atmosphere to the music, complementing and adding complexity to the compositions. The sparse but impactful drums played by George Karanikolaou provide the album with some intense moments where the group lets loose and experiments with noise like towards the end of “Mariana Trench”. Finally, the production and mixing by Theodore Zefkilis brings all of these elements masterfully together shaping the sound of the album.
Inspired by a journey to the Atlantic Ocean, “Ocean Highway” seeks to convey the feeling of letting the mind travel while watching the waves dance. Like a summer midday nap where the listener is half awake and half asleep; watching dream and reality blend together, the music in “Ocean Highway” takes us on a journey of exploring our own thoughts and feelings through its creators’ unique point of view.
