D-Day - a Grateful Dead tribute with musicians from Germany - DO NOT file under Krautrock! The idea for this Grateful Dead tribute sampler - from the land of the Krauts - took its beginning in the fall of 2020 through an Instagram post by Michael Drexler (The Last Temple). Drexler posted a Dead concert poster featuring a guitar-playing skeleton and a rosary around his skull. In the ensuing discussion, Christoph Bauer (The Lost Verses) explored the question of what influence the Grateful Dead had and still have on artists in Germany. The first answers promptly came in the form of musical contributions - first from Tom Liwa (Flowerpornoes) and Carl-Ludwig Reichert of the Bavarian 70s legend Sparifankal. Inspired by the tribute project "Day of the Dead" (2016), which gathered Dead cover versions from US artists, Bauer searched for further artists who showed the importance of the Grateful Dead for musicians inside Germany. As a result, D-Day now contains 16 tracks by a dozen musicians; ten of these contributions are previously unreleased and were created in connection with the project. The anticipation of the release was rightly dampened by the news of Carl-Ludwig Reichert's death shortly before completion. Reichert recorded the memory of his encounter with the Grateful Dead in Munich in the liner notes of the CD. We dedicate the release to his memory.
