Climate Change was born out of urgent conversations about both the literal and metaphorical impacts of climate change. Rooted in the need for global cooperation, Climate Change bridges cultural and musical divides through a deeply creative and collaborative process. Over three years, these four musicians, coming from distinct musical worlds—jazz, classical, and world music—worked together to create an album that transcends genre and speaks to the global challenges we face.
Vanishing Point explores musical convergence, blending elements of contemporary classical, jazz, and improvisation. The album’s rich soundscapes reflect both the fragility of our world and the hope for unity through creativity. From the apocalyptic urgency of Christos Hatzis' Cruel Elegance, to Christos Rafalides' vibraphone creating subtle harmonic tensions, to Petros Klampanis' lyrical bass improvisations, and Antonis Sousamoglou’s masterful performance, Vanishing Point offers listeners a profound musical journey.
The String Quartet:
A Key Element in the Sonic Tapestry A vital part of the project is the exceptional string quartet led by Antonis Sousamoglou (first violin), with David Bogorad (second violin), Athanasios Sourgounis (viola), and Vassilis Saitis (cello). These principal members of the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra bring their virtuosic performances to the intricate arrangements, forming the core of the album's hauntingly beautiful and evocative sound.
The Musicians Behind Climate Change
Christos Hatzis (composition, arrangements): A renowned, multi-awarded classical composer, Hatzis brings his distinct fusion of modern and traditional influences, creating works that reflect societal challenges.
Christos Rafalides (vibraphone): A pioneering jazz mallet player, Rafalides contributes harmonic innovation and rhythmic fluidity, merging jazz and classical elements seamlessly.
Petros Klampanis (bass, voice): A visionary bassist, composer, and producer, Klampanis adds emotive improvisation and depth to the ensemble’s sound.
Antonis Sousamoglou (violin, arrangements): An internationally acclaimed classical violinist and Concertmaster of the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, Sousamoglou anchors the quartet, adding both precision and emotional depth.
A Reflection of Urgency and Hope
The title track, Vanishing Point, serves as the culmination of this collective effort, symbolizing the distant horizon we face as a society. It reflects the intersection of all paths and the need for unity in a time of global crisis. As composer Christos Hatzis notes, “By now, Climate Change is an indisputable fact, affecting every aspect of our lives. But there's another kind of ‘climate change’ we must master—one that brings us together through a common human culture, transcending nationalities and boundaries. Our collaboration as musicians was driven by this idea of convergence, working across classical, jazz, and world music to create something that feels urgent and necessary. If music can change us, maybe it can inspire others to change as well.”
