Irmin Schmidt, co-founder of CAN, blurs composition and environment on Requiem, a contemplative work shaped at his home in the South of France. The album unfolds in two extended sections, pairing prepared and unprepared piano with field recordings of water, birds, frogs and the subtle pulse of night air.

What began as a spontaneous recording of a nightingale became a personal ritual: Schmidt responding instinctively at the piano, later refining the material with long-time collaborator René Tinner. The result is spacious and reflective, allowing sound and silence to settle into shared terrain.

Now approaching his 89th year, the classically trained composer draws together present experience and distant past, letting them blur and resurface in equal measure. Requiem stands among his most intimate and affecting works — a patient, elemental meditation shaped by time, place and attentive listening.
