For OOIOO, The Horizon Spirals features two expansive, gamelan-inflected pieces that push their hypnotic rock language into new terrain. Founded and led by YoshimiO, the group has long fused freeform experimentation with driving rhythm, acrobatic vocals and an ever-shifting instrumental palette. Here, the use of iron gamelan — black-painted and lighter in tone than the bronze instruments used on earlier recordings — lends the music a sharper, more buoyant lift, allowing the compositions to spiral upward with renewed energy.
On the flip, The Horizon Viral captures Lightning Bolt in full flight. Brian Chippendale and Brian Gibson channel their trademark barrage of hyperactive drumming, blown-out bass and skewed melody into five ferocious tracks that feel both immediate and expansive. Drawing on refined home-recording methods and Gibson’s experience composing for video games, the recordings retain the duo’s raw abandon while revealing new depth and detail.
Together, the split highlights the deep parallels between both projects: gleeful excess, unrelenting momentum and a belief in sound as a physical, transformative force.
