NOMEANSNO’s Sex Mad stands as one of the most confrontational and forward-thinking statements in punk history. Emerging in the mid-1980s, it was a record that refused orthodoxy, channelling the era’s anxiety into something volatile, physical and sharply focused.

From the opening surge of ‘Dad’, the band made their intent unmistakable. Brothers Rob and John Wright, joined by guitarist Andy Kerr, built a sound that collided hardcore urgency with jazz-level precision, elastic funk rhythms and the edge of art rock. It was aggressive without being blunt, complex without losing impact.

Lyrically, Sex Mad cuts into alienation, addiction and social decay with a rare mix of intellect and emotional weight. Rob Wright’s barked vocals and muscular basslines give the songs an unfiltered intensity, while Kerr’s provocative cover artwork — controversial enough to be censored by some retailers — reflected the band’s refusal to soften their message.

Recorded in Vancouver with producer Cecil English, the album captured the ferocity of NOMEANSNO’s live presence while revealing musicianship far beyond punk convention. Initially divisive, Sex Mad has since become a touchstone of experimental punk, leaving a clear imprint on generations of artists who followed.

Uncompromising, restless and still unsettling, it remains a defining work of musical defiance.
