McCoy Tyner deepened his engagement with African musical traditions on Asante, building on ideas explored in earlier compositions like ‘African Village’ and ‘Message from the Nile’.

The album centres on a dense rhythmic pulse from drummer Billy Hart and percussionist Mtume, with Tyner joined by bassist Buster Williams, guitarist Ted Dunbar and alto saxophonist Andrew White. Vocalist Songai adds a striking presence to the extended opener ‘Malika’ and the title track.

Traces of the modal language Tyner helped forge with the John Coltrane Quartet remain—especially on the driving closer ‘Fulfillment’—while the music also points toward new directions in his evolving sound.
