Somewhere between the stillness of the sea and the weight of memory, pianist and composer Thanasis Valsamis traces the invisible line where balance meets surrender. Load Line – or Γραμμή Φόρτωσης in Greek – borrows its title from the mark painted on a ship’s hull, indicating the maximum depth to which it may safely sink when loaded. It is both a maritime term and a metaphor: for emotional density, creative equilibrium, and the invisible boundaries that hold us steady.

Throughout seven compositions, Valsamis shapes a language of introspection and quiet intensity. His piano writing unfolds with restraint and warmth, moving between structure and improvisation like the shifting weight of a vessel on open water. The ensemble around him – Leonidas Sarantopoulos (flute), Grigoris Asimakopoulos (tenor sax), Grigoris Theodoridis (double bass), Vagelis Karipis (percussion), and Vagelis Kotzampasis (drums) – deepens the album’s dialogue between motion and stillness, tradition and modern sound.

Among the album’s standouts, The Stoker (Ο Θερμαστής) revisits a 1934 rebetiko song by Giorgos Mpatis, translating its gritty maritime poetry into a contemporary jazz idiom, while Piano of the Deep (Πιάνο Βυθού) takes inspiration from the late poet Yannis Varveris, whose voice and imagery echo like sonar beneath the surface.

Recorded at Studio Sierra in Athens in 2024 and co-produced by George Kariotis, Christos Zorbas, and Petros Klampanis, Load Line belongs to the growing body of contemporary Greek music that transcends genre boundaries. It speaks in the language of jazz, but also of the Aegean — a sea that holds memory, migration, rhythm, and reflection.

Valsamis doesn’t seek to dazzle with virtuosity. Instead, he offers something more enduring: the sound of equilibrium, of an artist finding balance between inner motion and outer calm.
