When Donuts came out, on J Dilla's birthday, February 7, 2006, it was with this drawing cover (scribbled up by Jeff Jank). As some years passed, the vinyl was eventually reissued with "the smile" photo cover, and the drawing cover eventually went out of print. Here's the 10th anniversary edition of the album. His debut as a solo artist was 2001’s Welcome to Detroit on BBE, and he joined forces with Stones Throw two years later, collaborating with Madlib on the now-famous Jaylib album.
Donuts was the last record he made before he succumbed to the blood disease lupus in Feb 2006. Tracks have subsequently been used as beats for the likes of Ghostface Killah, MF DOOM, Talib Kweli, Q-Tip, Guilty Simpson and more.
